Dear Shoreline Unified School District Community,
We are excited to begin a new semester of learning and growth with your students. As we move forward together, we want to share that at the January 16, 2025, meeting, the Shoreline Unified School District (SUSD) Board of Trustees unanimously passed Resolution 2024.25.8, officially declaring SUSD a Sanctuary District. This resolution reaffirms our unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable educational environment where all students, staff, and families feel valued, safe, and supported.
What It Means to Be a Sanctuary District
A Commitment to Equity and Inclusion
Shoreline Unified recognizes the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, regardless of immigration status. Diversity is one of our district's greatest strengths, and we are committed to ensuring that every student and staff member is protected from discrimination, harassment, and intimidation.
A Safe Space for Learning
Immigration enforcement activities, including the presence of ICE or other law enforcement agencies, have no place in our schools. We will continue to protect the learning environment for all students and their families. Our schools are a place where your child’s safety and well-being come first.
Privacy and Protection
We will never ask about or collect information regarding a student’s immigration status. Our priority is your child’s education, not their background. We believe that no child should feel singled out or unsafe because of who they are.
Support for Families and Staff
To ensure that our schools are inclusive and supportive, the district will:
Provide training for staff and administrators on the rights of immigrant students and families and best practices for maintaining safe learning environments.
Collaborate with community organizations and legal service providers to empower immigrant families and provide resources to address their needs.
We understand that this resolution comes during a time when many in our community may feel uncertainty or concern. Please know that SUSD is here to support every student, every family, and every staff member. Our counselors, teachers, and administrators are available to provide guidance, resources, or simply a listening ear.
As a Sanctuary District, we are proud to stand together in our commitment to equity, safety, and inclusion. Thank you for being an essential part of the Shoreline Unified community. Together, we will continue to ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
In Community,
Adam Jennings
